At half past two in the afternoon, our Great White pelicans in pelican cove start to become agitated! They know its time to be fed. If your lucky enough to be there you can use our covered shelter to take a seat, watch our pelicans being fed and ask our keepers as many questions as you like!

Great white pelicans average at a weight over 9kg, and in a change to custom it’s the boys who wear pink! In breeding condition, the males have a pink blush to their facial skin, where as females have an orangey complexion!

Also at pelican cove you can view some of our impressive sea duck collection – including Pacific, Spectacled and Faroe Island eiders. Their downy feathers are the ones which are collected to fill eider-down pillows!!

Did you know?

  • Great white pelicans have a large distribution, many living in Africa and Asia, and breeding right up to Eastern Europe, around half of all Great White pelicans breed in Romania!
  • The strange mating call of male eider ducks is often described as ‘crooning’, move over Frank Sinatra!
  • Blackbrook holds four different kinds of pelican – Chilean, Dalmation, Pink-backed and the Great White (also known as Eastern white pelican).
