Did you know that Cranes suffered a phenomenon known an Extirpation? In 1979 there were no breeding pairs left in the UK, after hunting for meat and fashion accessories wiped out the bird to local extinction. Fortunately 5 years later 3 Eurasian Cranes migrated to Norfolk in England and decided to make their home – and soon after a new baby – here with us. By the year 2014 we hope to have 150 resident Eurasian Cranes living wild in England. Every Crane at Blackbrook plays a very important part in the Conservation of critically endangered and extirpated Crane species through their excellent role as ambassadors for wild Cranes and those who are being bred within The Great Crane Project and released into the wild every year. Please help to support & increase the vital work we are doing to care for these magnificent birds and share them with the public visitors of the park.
Blackbrook has the largest collection of Crane species in the UK for visitors to actually visit & learn from, and the education we provide through activities, talks, and simple observation of these birds will ensure the future breeding success of those birds who are being carefully reared for release into the wild by species recovery projects currently in situ within our country, across Europe and worldwide.
