Health & Safety Information

At Blackbrook we take health and safety very seriously. We provide you with a guideline to health & safety and risk assessments upon booking your visit, however we recommend that all teachers/group leaders pre-visit to carry out their own risk assessment before the day of your visit, this can be arranged on booking.

The DfES Health and Safety of Pupils on Educational Visits 1998 Act advises that the supervising ratio of adults and children is –
  • 1 Adult for every 6 pupils at Primary Level
  • 1 Adult for every 10 pupils at Secondary Level
To ensure your visit to Blackbrook is as enjoyable and safe as possible we have a few Zoo rules that we ask groups to adhere to –
  • Hygiene is very important, particularly before consuming food and after handling animals, please ensure hands are washed and alcohol dispensers are used at regular intervals.
  • To alleviate stress in our animals please make sure loud noises are kept to a minimum; this ensures that all our animals can be viewed in close proximity.
  • Keep on the designated paths and avoid putting fingers through fences. Many of our bird species have very long, sharp beaks and will peck at hands.
  • Stay behind designated keeper/Tour guide and follow instructions sensibly and first time.
