The renovation of our tropical house has included the redevelopment of the central area to form an island of tropical trees! Look up! Bright Bee-Eaters buzz through the air catching flies as the bright little Tiger Finches dart about. All around you is the sound of Pekin Robins and other tropical birds singing.
Amongst the dense planted walk-through area are tropical crowned pigeon, the largest pigeons on Earth and bright blue to boot!
More jewels of our Flight of Fantasy are in aviaries throughout the building, as you walk around in tropical heat, under our waterfall, and beneath the branches – our Pygmy Owls, at just around 6” in size, and green Tree Monitor Lizards, as well as snakes and many tropical birds can be witnessed.
Through the large viewing window to a connecting outside aviary you can view our stunning wading bird collection, and our group of rare Pink-Eared Ducks!
And don’t miss our miniature monkeys! Tamarins and Marmosets are tiny monkeys from South and Central America – and at Blackbrook these bite-size monkeys make everybody smile with their excitable and active behaviour, running and jumping from branch to branch, before retreating to peek coyly from their nest-hole.
Did you know?
- What you see is not always what you get – although many birds may look like they have some red feathers, it is only the African turacos have actual red feathers – other birds just use a trick of the light!
- Bee-eaters are named for their habit of catching bee’s and removing their stings by rubbing them on branches, before eating them! Gulp!
- Male crowned pigeons are very gentleman-like, bowing to their fair lady! These giant pigeons can live for over 20 years!
